MET Live in HD: Verdi’s La Traviata

Presented by Cal Poly Arts and Opera San Luis Obispo
CHRISTOPHER COHAN CENTER

Sonya Yoncheva sings one of opera’s most beloved heroines, the tragic courtesan Violetta, a role in which she triumphed on the Met stage in 2015, opposite Michael Fabiano as her lover, Alfredo, and Thomas Hampson as his father, Germont. Nicola Luisotti conducts.

Brief synopsis: Based on Dumas’s "La Dame aux Camélias", a meditation on the author’s youthful affair with the celebrated prostitute Marie Duplessis, known as a sophisticated and well-read woman whose charms and tact far surpassed her station, La Traviata is a love story shrouded in sacrifice and misunderstanding. The role of the “fallen woman” has captured the imaginations of audiences and performers alike with its inexhaustible dramatic possibilities – and challenges.
Run time: 2 hours, 55 minutes
