The Cal Poly Jazz Ensembles will present “Sounds of Harmony” featuring performances by Cal Poly’s University Jazz Band, Vocal Jazz Ensemble and four Cal Poly Jazz Combos.
Guest artist Inga Swearingen will join the Vocal Jazz Ensemble for its set which will include “Centerpiece” by Harry Edison and Jon Hendricks, “Company” by Rosana Eckert, and Jennifer Barnes’ arrangement of Steve Allee’s “Art’s Groove.”
The Jazz Combos will perform a mix of standards and original student arrangements, and the University Jazz Band will play selections by Les Hooper, Jeff Jarvis, Mike Tomaro, Wayne Wallace, and other renowned composers.
Swearingen is a native of San Luis Obispo county. She sang and studied voice at San Luis Obispo High School, Cuesta College and at Cal Poly. She performed for the renowned radio show, “A Prairie Home Companion,” more than a dozen times; was a first-place winner at the Montreux Jazz Festival Shure Vocal Competition; and was a featured soloist in Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall. She teaches jazz voice, songwriting and musicianship at Cuesta College.
Jamaal Baptiste directs the University Jazz Band and Vocal Jazz Ensemble, and Dylan Johnson directs the Jazz Combos.
