Cal Poly Student Opera Theatre will present a double bill of “Venus and Adonis” and “In the Market for Love” at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 11, in the Spanos Theatre (No. 44) on campus.
The program will feature two seldom-performed one-act operas that show how love can be found in the strangest of ways: John Blow's baroque tragedy “Venus and Adonis,” the story of the ill-fated lovers from Greek mythology; and Jacques Offenbach's comic operetta “In the Market for Love,” a farcical story that takes place at a farmers market.
Nearly 50 Cal Poly students are participating in the fully staged production with chamber orchestra, both onstage and behind the scenes. In addition to the opera singers, the program will feature choreography by Theatre and Dance Department students, and students will be assisting backstage with props, costumes and staging.
The Music Department’s Kaitrin Cunningham is the director and producer, Scott Glysson is the conductor, Paul Woodring is the coach, and Laina Babb of the Theatre and Dance Department is the costume designer.
The production is one of many scheduled events during Cal Poly's 33rd annual Open House.
