The Cal Poly Wind Bands’ Spring Concert will be the 72nd and final Music Department presentation of its 2024-25 season. Titled “Edifice,” the program will touch on how sound and space interact within architectural constructs, and several of the works explicitly connect with architectural frameworks.
The Wind Orchestra will present Peter Meechan’s “James Webb’s Pillars (From A Starry Night)” — with allusions to Vincent Van Gogh and the famous 1995 NASA Pillars of Creation photo — and “Dreams of an Architect” by Joshua Ideo.
The Wind Ensemble will perform Frank Ticheli’s monumental work, “Angels in the Architecture,” and “Cathedrals” by Kathryn Salfelder.
Clarinetist Sarra Hey-Folick will be the guest soloist for “Black Dog Rhapsody for Clarinet” by Scott McAllister, which is a wickedly fun piece that draws inspiration from Led Zeppelin.
Hey-Folick teaches applied clarinet at Cal Poly, and directs its Clarinet Ensemble. She is also a lecturer at Ventura Community College and is a teaching artist for the Youth Orchestra Los Angeles, a Los Angeles Philharmonic organization. She plays with local orchestras in both Southern and Central California. Her studio credits include the 2024 Halsey album, “The Great Impersonator.”
Director of Bands Christopher J. Woodruff directs the Wind Ensemble, and Associate Director of Bands Nicholas P. Waldron directs the Wind Orchestra.
The event is sponsored by Cal Poly’s Music Department, College of Liberal Arts and Instructionally Related Activities program.
